We also have a printable version here of this service.

We adore you O Christ and we bless you

Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Opening Prayer:

Almighty God look with mercy on this your family for which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed and given up into the hands of the wicked and to suffer death upon the cross; but who is alive and glorified with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Read an account of the passion of Jesus: Matthew 27 v32-56; John 19 v16-30

Reflect on:
Is there anything about the passage which you have read which strikes you?

What does Good Friday mean to you? Or how you feel about Good Friday?

For Prayer: hold or imagine a cross

Lord Jesus Christ, we confess we have failed you as did your disciples, and we ask for your mercy and your help:

When we are tempted to betray you for the sake of selfish gain:

Lord, forgive us and help us.

When we do not keep watch in prayer, and will not share the pain of your suffering:

Lord, forgive us and help us.

When we allow the world to silence you, and run away from those who abuse you:

Lord, forgive us and help us.

When we will not confess your name, and fear the consequences of being known to belong to you:

Lord forgive us and help us.

Remember and pray for:

  • all who are dying
  • all who grieve
  • all who give their lives in the service of others…

THE LORD’S PRAYER: use the version you prefer

Eternal God, in the cross of Jesus we see the cost of our sin and the depth of your love: in humble hope and fear may we place at his feet all that we have and all that we are, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
